About the place
The Castle of Culture was built for General Jovan Belimarković (1827–1906) between 1888 and 1894, on the rise above the Topla voda spring. It was designed by the general’s nephew, the engineer Pavle Denić, and built under the Austrian engineer Franz Winter, after castles in Italy and Poland.
Belimarković’s heirs lived in the castle until the 1970s, when the state bought it and made it a cultural venue. Today the Vrnjačka Banja Cultural Centre runs it, and it houses the local museum with archaeological, ethnological, historical and art collections.
The permanent exhibition has three parts: “Lađarište, the prehistory of Vrnjci”, “The ethnographic heritage of Vrnjačka Banja” and the “Memorial room of General Belimarković”. In summer the castle also hosts concerts, exhibitions and festivals, so check the programme.
The castle is in the centre, a few minutes from the promenade, and pairs well with the Bridge of Love and the park. For museum hours and current exhibitions, call the Cultural Centre.
