About the place
Merkur Special Hospital is the main health institution of Vrnjačka Banja and the place where spa treatment actually happens: medical check-ups, therapies, rehabilitation and programmes using the spa’s mineral water. The hospital has its own accommodation, Merkur Novi, Šumadija and Sveti Đorđe, so patients sleep and eat where they are treated.
According to the hospital, its programmes focus on diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity and musculoskeletal conditions, with general health check-up and prevention packages as well. Merkur also runs the “Rimski izvor” spa centre and the “Waterfall” aqua centre.
For Serbian insured patients, diabetes treatment can be covered by the national health insurance fund (RFZO): the GP proposes the referral from medical records, and the fund’s medical board decides. That stay lasts 10 days. It applies to adults moved from tablets to insulin, or on two or more insulin doses a day or an insulin pump, with a discharge letter or a specialist’s opinion no older than six months.
You can also come without a referral, paying yourself, on a medical or spa board package. Talk to your own doctor before choosing a treatment programme, and check terms and dates directly with the hospital’s booking office.
